Seawater Reverse Osmosis (SWRO)

High-pressure seawater desalination for remote, offshore, and coastal facilities.

Overview

Basiia packages seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO) systems for desalination of open seawater and high-salinity feeds with TDS up to 45,000 mg/L. Operating at feed pressures of 55–80 bar, SWRO systems produce potable or process-quality permeate at 35–45% recovery. Energy recovery devices (pressure exchangers or turbochargers) are integrated to reduce specific energy consumption to 2.5–4.0 kWh/m³. Our packages are designed for remote camps, offshore platforms, coastal industrial facilities, and island water supply — with full pre-treatment, intake screening, and post-treatment remineralisation.

Typical Applications

  • Offshore platform and FPSO potable water production
  • Remote coastal camp water supply
  • Island and coastal community desalination
  • Industrial process water from seawater sources
  • Emergency and standby water supply systems
  • Naval and marine vessel water production
  • Coastal power plant cooling water make-up
  • Resort and hospitality water supply in coastal areas

Key Features

Engineered for Performance

High-Rejection SWRO Membranes

High-rejection seawater-grade TFC polyamide spiral-wound membrane elements (>99.7% NaCl rejection) in 8" diameter pressure vessels — configured in single-pass or two-pass arrays to achieve target permeate TDS.

Energy Recovery Devices

Pressure exchanger (PX) or turbocharger energy recovery devices recover hydraulic energy from the high-pressure concentrate stream — reducing specific energy consumption from 6–8 kWh/m³ (without ERD) to 2.5–4.0 kWh/m³.

Seawater Pre-Treatment Train

Integrated pre-treatment including coarse screening, dissolved air flotation (DAF) or media filtration, cartridge filtration, and antiscalant/biocide dosing — protecting SWRO membranes from biofouling, scaling, and particulate damage.

Corrosion-Resistant Materials

Super duplex stainless steel (SAF 2507) high-pressure piping, duplex SS pressure vessels, and GRP or HDPE pre-treatment vessels — specified for seawater service and coastal environments.

Two-Pass Configuration

Optional second-pass RO for boron removal and ultra-low TDS permeate production — required for potable water applications in regions with strict boron limits (<0.5 mg/L WHO guideline).

Post-Treatment & Disinfection

Permeate remineralisation via calcite contactors or lime dosing, CO₂ stripping, pH correction, and chlorination or UV disinfection — producing potable water meeting WHO and local regulatory standards.

Applicable Standards

  • ISO 9001
  • WHO Guidelines for Drinking-Water Quality
  • ASME B31.3 (Process Piping)
  • NSF/ANSI 58 (RO drinking water systems)
  • IDA (International Desalination Association) best practices
