Sand Filters & Multimedia Filters

Robust pressure filtration for suspended solids, turbidity, and iron removal.

Overview

Basiia supplies pressure sand filters and multimedia filters for removal of suspended solids, turbidity, iron, manganese, and other particulates from water and process streams. Sand filters use a single graded silica sand media bed; multimedia filters use a stratified bed of anthracite, sand, and garnet — providing deeper filtration and longer filter runs between backwash cycles. Both types are supplied as vertical or horizontal pressure vessels with automated backwash, differential pressure monitoring, and PLC control. They are widely used as pre-treatment ahead of RO, UF, and ion exchange systems, and for standalone water clarification.

Typical Applications

  • Pre-treatment ahead of RO, UF, and ion exchange systems
  • Potable water clarification from surface and groundwater sources
  • Iron and manganese removal from groundwater
  • Cooling tower make-up water treatment
  • Swimming pool and recreational water filtration
  • Industrial process water clarification
  • Tertiary wastewater polishing
  • Backwash water recovery and recycle

Key Features

Engineered for Performance

Multimedia Filter Media

Stratified anthracite (coarse, low density) / silica sand (medium) / garnet (fine, high density) media bed — providing depth filtration with each layer capturing progressively finer particles, extending filter run times versus single-media sand filters.

Pressure Vessel Design

Carbon steel or FRP pressure vessels designed to ASME VIII or PED — with internal distribution headers, media support underdrain, and manway access for media inspection and replacement.

Automated Backwash

Automated backwash initiated by differential pressure or timed cycle — with air scouring option for effective media cleaning and restoration of filter bed permeability.

Iron & Manganese Removal

Oxidation (aeration, chlorination, or potassium permanganate dosing) followed by pressure filtration for removal of dissolved iron and manganese from groundwater — meeting potable water quality limits.

Turbidity Reduction

Effective reduction of influent turbidity from 10–50 NTU to <1 NTU — protecting downstream membrane systems from particulate fouling and extending membrane service life.

Coagulation & Flocculation Pre-Treatment

Optional inline coagulation (alum, ferric sulphate, or polyelectrolyte dosing) and static mixing upstream of the filter — enhancing removal of fine colloids and colour from surface water sources.

Applicable Standards

  • ISO 9001
  • ASME VIII Div. 1 (pressure vessels)
  • AWWA B100 (Granular Filter Material)
  • WHO Guidelines for Drinking-Water Quality
  • Local environmental regulations
