Multimedia Filters

Stratified multi-layer filtration for deeper solids removal and longer filter runs.

Overview

Basiia supplies multimedia pressure filters using a stratified bed of anthracite, silica sand, and garnet media for deeper filtration and longer filter runs between backwash cycles compared to single-media sand filters. The coarse-to-fine stratification (anthracite on top, garnet at base) captures particles progressively through the bed depth — distributing the solids load and extending the time to breakthrough. Multimedia filters are used as pre-treatment ahead of RO and UF systems, for potable water clarification, and for industrial process water treatment.

Typical Applications

  • Pre-treatment ahead of RO and UF membrane systems
  • Potable water clarification from surface and groundwater
  • Industrial process water treatment
  • Cooling tower make-up water filtration
  • Iron and turbidity removal from groundwater
  • Tertiary wastewater polishing for reuse
  • Pre-treatment ahead of ion exchange systems
  • Produced water pre-treatment

Key Features

Engineered for Performance

Three-Layer Media Bed

Stratified anthracite (0.8–1.6 mm, SG 1.4–1.6) / silica sand (0.4–0.8 mm, SG 2.65) / garnet (0.2–0.4 mm, SG 4.0) media bed — providing depth filtration with each layer capturing progressively finer particles.

Extended Filter Runs

Deeper solids penetration into the media bed extends filter run times by 30–50% versus single-media sand filters — reducing backwash frequency and water consumption.

Lower Effluent Turbidity

Consistently achieves effluent turbidity <0.5 NTU from feeds up to 20 NTU — meeting RO membrane pre-treatment requirements (SDI <5) and potable water quality standards.

Pressure Vessel Design

Vertical pressure vessels in carbon steel (epoxy-lined), FRP, and 316L stainless steel — designed to ASME VIII or PED with internal distribution headers, media support underdrain, and manway access.

Air Scour Backwash

Air scour followed by water backwash restores media stratification and removes accumulated solids — with automated backwash controller and differential pressure monitoring.

Coagulant Dosing Option

Optional inline coagulant dosing (alum, ferric sulphate, or polyelectrolyte) and static mixing upstream of the filter — enhancing removal of fine colloids, colour, and NOM from surface water sources.

Applicable Standards

  • ISO 9001
  • ASME VIII Div. 1 (pressure vessels)
  • AWWA B100 (Granular Filter Material)
  • WHO Guidelines for Drinking-Water Quality
  • Local environmental regulations
