Microfiltration (MF) Systems

Low-pressure removal of suspended solids, turbidity, and microorganisms.

Overview

Microfiltration (MF) membranes (0.1–10 µm pore size) remove suspended solids, turbidity, bacteria, protozoa (Cryptosporidium, Giardia), and large colloids from water and process streams at low transmembrane pressure (0.1–2 bar). Basiia packages MF systems using hollow-fibre or ceramic membrane modules for pre-treatment, product clarification, and tertiary wastewater polishing applications. MF is used where UF is not required and where a physical barrier against particulates and microorganisms is needed at high flux and low energy consumption.

Typical Applications

  • Pre-treatment ahead of UF or RO systems
  • Surface water clarification — turbidity and TSS removal
  • Tertiary wastewater polishing for reuse
  • Removal of Cryptosporidium and Giardia from drinking water
  • Industrial process stream clarification
  • Food and beverage product clarification
  • Cooling water treatment
  • Backwash water recovery and recycle

Key Features

Engineered for Performance

Hollow-Fibre MF Modules

PVDF or PP hollow-fibre membrane modules with 0.1–0.45 µm nominal pore size — providing effective removal of suspended solids, bacteria, and protozoa at high flux and low operating pressure.

Low Transmembrane Pressure

Operating TMP of 0.1–2 bar reduces energy consumption and pump requirements compared to UF and RO — making MF economical for large-volume pre-treatment and clarification applications.

Ceramic Membrane Option

Alumina or silicon carbide ceramic membrane modules for aggressive chemical environments, high-temperature streams, and applications requiring steam sterilisation — with superior chemical and mechanical durability versus polymeric membranes.

Automated Backwash

Automated air-assisted or water backwash cycles to remove accumulated solids from membrane surfaces — with chemically enhanced backwash (CEB) for biological fouling control.

Protozoa Removal

Physical membrane barrier provides absolute removal of Cryptosporidium (4 µm) and Giardia (8–12 µm) cysts — meeting regulatory requirements for protozoa removal in drinking water treatment without chemical disinfection.

Skid-Mounted Package

Compact skid with MF membrane modules, feed pump, backwash system, chemical dosing, and PLC control — factory assembled and tested for rapid site installation.

Applicable Standards

  • ISO 9001
  • NSF/ANSI 61 (membrane materials for potable contact)
  • WHO Guidelines for Drinking-Water Quality
  • ASME B31.3 (Process Piping)
  • US EPA LT2ESWTR (Long Term 2 Enhanced Surface Water Treatment Rule)
