MBR — Membrane Bioreactor

High-quality effluent and compact footprint through membrane filtration.

Overview

Membrane Bioreactor (MBR) technology combines biological activated sludge treatment with submerged ultrafiltration (UF) membranes — replacing secondary clarifiers with a physical membrane barrier. The result is a consistently high-quality effluent (BOD <5 mg/L, TSS <1 mg/L, turbidity <1 NTU) in a footprint 30–50% smaller than conventional AS. Basiia supplies MBR systems using hollow-fibre and flat-sheet membrane modules from leading manufacturers, integrated with biological process design, membrane aeration, and CIP systems.

Typical Applications

  • High-quality effluent for reuse (irrigation, cooling, process)
  • Space-constrained industrial and camp sewage treatment
  • Upgrade of existing AS plants to meet tighter effluent limits
  • Food and beverage high-strength effluent treatment
  • Pharmaceutical and healthcare facility wastewater
  • Offshore and marine sewage treatment
  • Municipal wastewater reuse schemes
  • Pre-treatment ahead of reverse osmosis (RO)

Key Features

Engineered for Performance

Submerged UF Membrane Modules

Hollow-fibre or flat-sheet ultrafiltration membranes submerged in the aeration basin — operating under slight vacuum to draw permeate through the membrane, with coarse bubble aeration for membrane scouring.

High Effluent Quality

Physical membrane barrier produces effluent with BOD <5 mg/L, TSS <1 mg/L, and turbidity <1 NTU — consistently meeting reuse standards regardless of biological process upsets.

Compact Footprint

Elimination of secondary clarifiers and operation at higher mixed liquor suspended solids (MLSS 8,000–15,000 mg/L) reduces basin volume by 30–50% versus conventional AS for the same treatment capacity.

CIP & Membrane Maintenance

Automated clean-in-place (CIP) sequences with sodium hypochlorite and citric acid — maintaining membrane permeability and extending membrane life to 7–10 years with proper operation.

RO Pre-Treatment

MBR effluent quality is suitable as direct feed to reverse osmosis — enabling water reuse schemes where RO polishing is required for potable or high-purity process water production.

Integrated Biological Design

Full biological process design including anoxic zones for denitrification, anaerobic zones for biological phosphorus removal, and membrane tank sizing — delivered as a complete engineered package.

Applicable Standards

  • ISO 9001
  • WHO Guidelines for Wastewater Reuse
  • NSF/ANSI 61 (membrane materials for potable contact)
  • Local environmental discharge regulations
  • ASME VIII (pressure vessels)
