Overview

Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor (MBBR) technology uses small plastic carrier media — freely suspended in an aerated or anoxic basin — to support a dense biofilm of microorganisms. The high specific surface area of the carriers (300–500 m²/m³) enables high volumetric treatment rates in a compact footprint, with no sludge return required. Basiia supplies MBBR systems as standalone biological treatment stages or as hybrid MBBR/activated sludge (IFAS) configurations for BOD removal, nitrification, and denitrification.

Engineered for Performance

Plastic Carrier Media

High-density polyethylene (HDPE) or polypropylene carriers with protected internal surface area (300–500 m²/m³) — biofilm grows on internal surfaces, protected from shear, with media retained by screens at basin outlet.

No Sludge Return Required

Biofilm attached to carriers eliminates the need for sludge recycle (RAS) — simplifying operation, reducing pumping energy, and making MBBR inherently stable under load variations.

Compact Footprint

High volumetric treatment rates (3–10× conventional AS) allow significantly smaller basin volumes — ideal for retrofitting existing tanks or installing on space-constrained sites.

Robust to Load Variations

Biofilm community adapts slowly to load changes — providing inherent buffering against shock loads, toxic events, and intermittent operation that would upset a suspended growth process.

IFAS Hybrid Configuration

Integrated Fixed-Film Activated Sludge (IFAS) combines MBBR carriers with suspended growth in the same basin — increasing capacity of existing AS plants without new basin construction.

Aerobic & Anoxic Stages

Aerobic MBBR stages for BOD removal and nitrification; anoxic MBBR stages (with mixing, no aeration) for denitrification — combined in series for full nitrogen removal.
