Activated Sludge Systems
Proven biological treatment for municipal and industrial sewage.
Overview
Activated sludge (AS) is the most widely deployed biological wastewater treatment process globally — using a mixed culture of suspended microorganisms in an aerated basin to oxidise organic matter and remove nutrients. Basiia designs and packages conventional activated sludge systems, extended aeration plants, and nutrient removal configurations (nitrification, denitrification, biological phosphorus removal) for industrial camps, municipal facilities, and process plant sewage streams. Our packages range from compact containerised units for remote sites to multi-basin plants for larger populations.
Typical Applications
- Industrial camp and facility sewage treatment
- Municipal and peri-urban wastewater treatment
- Food and beverage process wastewater
- Pharmaceutical and chemical effluent treatment
- Nutrient removal — nitrification and denitrification
- Biological phosphorus removal (Bio-P)
- Upgrade of existing primary treatment plants
- Effluent reuse pre-treatment
Key Features
Engineered for Performance
Conventional & Extended Aeration
Conventional AS with primary clarification for larger flows; extended aeration (no primary clarifier) for smaller, remote, or variable-flow applications — lower sludge production and simpler operation.
Nitrification & Denitrification
Single-sludge nitrification/denitrification configurations (pre-anoxic, post-anoxic, or step-feed) for total nitrogen removal — meeting stringent effluent nitrogen limits for sensitive receiving waters.
Biological Phosphorus Removal
Enhanced biological phosphorus removal (EBPR) using anaerobic/anoxic/aerobic (A²O) or UCT process configurations — reducing chemical phosphorus precipitation requirements and operating costs.
Secondary Clarifiers
Circular or rectangular secondary clarifiers with sludge return (RAS) and waste sludge (WAS) systems — designed to sludge volume index (SVI) and surface overflow rate for reliable solids separation.
Aeration Systems
Fine bubble diffused aeration with blowers and membrane disc or tube diffusers — or surface aerators for simpler installations — sized to oxygen demand with VSD blower control for energy efficiency.
Sludge Handling
Integrated sludge thickening, aerobic digestion, and dewatering (belt press, centrifuge, or drying beds) — producing a stabilised biosolid for disposal or beneficial reuse.
Applicable Standards
- ISO 9001
- WHO Guidelines for Wastewater Reuse
- Ten States Standards (Recommended Standards for Wastewater Facilities)
