Forced Recirculation Evaporators
Robust evaporation for scaling and fouling brines in ZLD systems.
Overview
Forced recirculation evaporators (FRE) are designed for high-scaling, high-fouling, and high-viscosity streams where falling film units are not suitable. High-velocity recirculation through external heat exchangers suppresses boiling at the tube surface — preventing scale deposition and enabling continuous operation on difficult brines. Basiia supplies FRE units as standalone concentrators or as the final concentration stage ahead of crystallisers in ZLD trains.
Typical Applications
- High-scaling brine concentration in ZLD systems
- Produced water with high silica or sulphate content
- Flue gas desulphurisation (FGD) wastewater
- Landfill leachate concentration
- Mining heap leach and process water
- Chemical and fertiliser process streams
- High-TDS industrial wastewater concentration
- Pre-crystalliser concentration stage
Key Features
Engineered for Performance
Forced Recirculation Design
High-velocity recirculation pump circulates brine through external shell-and-tube heat exchangers — flash evaporation occurs in the vapour body, keeping tube surfaces below saturation temperature and preventing scale formation.
Handles Difficult Streams
Suitable for streams with high scaling potential (calcium sulphate, silica, calcium carbonate), high suspended solids, or high viscosity — where falling film evaporators would foul rapidly.
External Heat Exchanger
Removable tube bundle heat exchangers allow mechanical cleaning and bundle replacement without taking the vapour body offline — minimising maintenance downtime.
High Concentration Ratios
Achieves very high brine concentration factors — reducing volume to the crystalliser and minimising the size and cost of downstream solids handling equipment.
Steam or MVR Heated
Compatible with low-pressure steam, waste heat, or mechanical vapour recompression (MVR) as the heat source — flexible integration into site energy systems.
Robust Construction
Heavy-duty construction with duplex stainless steel, super duplex, or titanium wetted parts — designed for continuous operation in aggressive, high-chloride brine environments.
Applicable Standards
- ASME VIII Div. 1 (Pressure Vessels)
- TEMA (Heat Exchanger Design)
- ISO 9001
- ATEX / IECEx (where applicable)
- Local environmental discharge regulations
